The Vermont State Police was formed July 1, 1947. U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Merritt Edson was named the first commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, and his influence continues today.
The Vermont State Police Archive Center & Museum, Inc , a nonprofit organization, was formed in 2007 with the support of VSP Command Staff. Its mission is to preserve and share the history of the Vermont State Police.
