A mandatory physical assessment program is an integral part of the hiring process, as well as part of your career with the Vermont State Police. Our assessment measures the following areas – sit and reach flexibility, bench press, sit ups, push ups, and a 1.5 mile run.

Pre-Basic Training
Vermont Troopers attend a 3-week Pre-Basic training course, prior to their entry into the Vermont Police Academy. These first few weeks are designed to build teamwork among the recruit class and introduce them to the Vermont State Police.

The Vermont State Police is a full-service law enforcement agency that provides primary law enforcement services to approximately 200 towns, 90 percent of the land mass, and 50 percent of the population in Vermont. As Vermont's largest law enforcement agency, we provide our members with many specialized career opportunities like Bomb Squad, Crime Scene Support Team, K-9, Tactical Support Unit, and other specialized teams. The Criminal Division, which investigates most homicides and unsolved cases in the state, is a highly trained and experienced team of troopers ready to respond 24/7. As a trooper moves through their career within the Vermont State Police, these and other career opportunites will be present for all troopers who seek them out.
