A mandatory physical assessment program is an integral part of the hiring process, as well as part of your career with the Vermont State Police. Our assessment measures the following areas – sit and reach flexibility, bench press, sit ups, push ups, and a 1.5 mile run.
- You must pass each portion of the test before moving on to the next portion.
- If you fail one portion, you are done for that testing day.
The minimum standards for the assessments are based on the 50th percentile for a candidate based on age and gender as developed by the Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research.
An overall fitness level of Superior is attained by: Superior on the run. Any three other fitness areas a superior. Remaining categories "Good" or above.
An overall fitness level of Excellent is attained by: Excellent on the run. Any three other fitness areas an excellent or above. Remaining categories "Good" or above.
An overall fitness level of Good is attained by: Good on the run. Any three other fitness areas a good or above. Remaining categories "Average" or above.
An overall fitness level of Average is attained with a score of Average on the run. You can ONLY score an Average overall with a score of Average on the run.

Flexibilty: Sit & Reach
A measure of flexibility is taken through the sit and reach test. The measurement is taken in inches.
This test is done on a Universal type machine & measures upper body strength. A candidate is evaluated on a single repetition as a percentage of their body weight.
1 minute time limit, with bent knees and feet held. Fingers remain cupped behind the ears and elbows must touch the knees.
1 minute time limit, back straight. No "modified" push-ups (knees on the floor) are allowed. You may rest in the "up" position if needed.
1.5 Mile Run
Measured course, timed in minutes and seconds.
