Special Operations Unit

VSP Marine Unit patrol on Lake ChamplainThe Special Operations Unit is a specialized component of the Vermont State Police designed to advance department objectives across a variety of program-specific fields. The Special Operations Unit oversees traffic safety, recreational safety and enforcement, and all department special teams.

Members assigned to the Special Operations Unit accomplish task-specific missions requiring unique expertise. They complete preparations for special events occurring within Vermont and supplement field units across all department divisions during critical incidents. These resources also are available to assist our local, county, state and federal law-enforcement partners within Vermont and, when requested, throughout New England. Special Operations members with VP Mike Pence, September 2018

Special Operations Unit members are trained across a variety of specialty fields including crash reconstruction, drug recognition, highway safety and impaired driving issues, canine operations, bomb technician, tactical operations, search and rescue operations, unmanned aircraft systems, and recreation enforcement. These members are called upon for support and to bring their expertise to active field operations. Many members also serve as instructors on their specialties within the Vermont law-enforcement community. They also ensure the Vermont State Police remains current with national standards and ever-changing technology.

The Special Operations Unit is commanded by Capt. Debra Munson, and the executive officer is Lt. Paul Ravelin.
