Criminal Division

One of the three divisions of the Vermont State Police, the Criminal Division is highly respected for its investigative abilities and specialized units.  The Criminal Division strives to efficiently and effectively investigate all major criminal offenses that come to our attention.  The Criminal Division works closely with the Field Force Division, Homeland Security, state and federal prosecutors, the office of the Chief Medical Examiner, other law enforcement agencies and fire departments in order to bring resolution to each case that is investigated. 

The Criminal Division, commanded by Major Glenn Hall, is made up of the Major Crime Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) and Special Investigations.  Detectives with specialized training, technical skills and expertise work collaboratively on the most serious crimes and complex investigations. 

Major Crime Unit

The Major Crime Unit (MCU) is primarily responsible for investigating the most serious crimes, specifically homicides and missing person cases that are suspicious in nature. The MCU investigates officer-involved shootings and other complex investigations as needed. 

Bureau of Criminal Investigations

The Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) is made of detectives primarily responsible for the investigation of criminal offenses to include, death investigations, sexual assaults, child sex crimes, child abuse, robberies, embezzlements, burglaries, fraud and other complex investigations. There are specialized units within BCI to include the Arson Unit, Polygraph Unit, Drug Diversion Unit (DDU),  and Computer Crime Unit.  Each of these units are made up of detectives with advanced specialized training. 

Special Investigations

Special Investigations is composed of the Narcotics Investigation Unit (NIU), the Vermont Intelligence Center (VIC) and the Homeland Security Unit (HSU). Members assigned to federal joint task forces also fall under Special Investigations. 

Special Investigations works closely with federal, state, county and local law enforcement and intelligence agencies within Vermont and across the country.
