Critical Action Team

The Critical Action Team (CAT) consists of troopers who are extensively trained in riot control formations, field force operations and tactics. The Vermont State Police CAT, established in summer 2019, provides the state with a regionalized response to all hazards related to civil unrest.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program

VSP UAS programThe Vermont State Police Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program is comprised of troopers who have obtained certification as remote pilots through the Federal Aviation Administration. Established in 2019, the program is focused on the use of evolving technology to enhance and support public safety missions across Vermont. 

Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement Team

CLET team membersThe Vermont State Police Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement Team (CLET) is composed of Troopers and Sergeants from across the state. Each member attends the Drug Enforcement Administration’s State and Local Clandestine Laboratory Certification School (SALC) and the Clandestine Laboratory Site Safety School in Quantico, VA.  Some experienced members complete Level A Hazmat certification. The team is required to meet OSHA standards and maintain DEA certifications.

Tactical Services Unit

TSU team The Vermont State Police Tactical Services Unit (TSU) observes the highest standards of professionalism at all times while offering 24-hour tactical assistance to all law enforcement agencies in Vermont. The mission of the TSU team is to preserve life in high-risk, potentially life-threatening situations through the use of specialized training, equipment and tactics. 

Search and Rescue

The Department of Public Safety has jurisdictional authority for backcountry search and rescue in Vermont.  The State Police Search & Rescue Team provides highly trained search management personnel, as well as trained field personnel.  The team also partners with many volunteer search and rescue teams, local first responders, ski patrols, local law enforcement agencies, Vermont Fish & Wildlife game wardens and others in a collaborative approach to locate a


VSP Diver

The mission of the Vermont State Police SCUBA team is an underwater recovery team. The team operates 24/7, 365 days a year and is capable of performing a number of technical underwater operations. The members of this team often include multiple levels of rank from trooper to lieutenant, assigned to various barracks or special assignments throughout the state. 

Members Assistance Team

Members Assistance Team logoThe Vermont State Police Members Assistance Team provides direct support, resources, appropriate referrals and training for VSP employees who have been exposed to trauma or need assistance with health or personal problems. This assistance is available regardless if the problem is work-related or a personal matter. Services also are available to VSP family members.

Honor Guard

The Vermont State Police, as an organization founded in the tradition of the U.S. Marine Corps, includes an Honor Guard Team that was established to represent our department at funerals, dedications and other special and ceremonial events inside Vermont and out of state.

Critical Incident Dispatch Team

Mobile Command PostThe Critical Incident Dispatch Team is the only VSP team made up of civilian personnel. The team is staffed by dispatchers from our two emergency communication centers. When needed for emergency or pre-planned incidents, the team staffs and operates a State Police Mobile Command Center.

Crisis Negotiation Unit

VSP Crisis Negotiation UnitThe Vermont State Police Crisis Negotiation Unit is the largest such unit in Vermont.  The team responds to calls involving people in crisis such as barricaded subjects, suicidal individuals, and hostage incidents. The team works closely with the Vermont State Police Tactical Services Unit to provide negotiation strategies and to help manage crisis situations.
