Critical Action Team

The Critical Action Team (CAT) consists of troopers who are extensively trained in riot control formations, field force operations and tactics. The Vermont State Police CAT, established in summer 2019, provides the state with a regionalized response to all hazards related to civil unrest.

The mission of the Critical Action Team is to safeguard free speech while at the same time protecting public safety. The team provides an all hazards response capability for civil disturbance, demonstrations, crowd management, critical infrastructure protection and other situations to restore law and order as well as protect life and property.

The team is comprised of troopers who along with their day-to-day duties and responsibilities receive specialized training to ensure mission readiness. CAT provides assistance and resources for local, county and federal law-enforcement agencies within the state of Vermont and other states or regions if necessary.
